Tanjō-jutsu

The Uchida Ryū Tanjō-jutsu is set of techniques employing a walking cane (or short staff) of the length of approximately 90 cm, or 3 feet, but it can be of a different length according to the practitioner’s height.

It was developed in the late 1800’s by senior Shintō Muso Ryū practitioner Uchida Ryōgorō Shihan, adapting the Jō-jutsu techniques to the walking cane fashion of the time, so to be employed as a defensive weapon. It was later incorporated by the 24th Headmaster Shiraishi Hanjiro in his teachings and transmitted to this day.

The curriculum includes 12 forms against an opponent armed with the sword, as well as several variation and self-defence applications.
